Chinese Wrestling (Shuai Jiao)

Shuaijiao (also spelled Shuai-Chiao) is a Chinese Kung Fu fighting method that is approximately four thousand years old. Shuaijiao was born in a time of war long ago when falling on the battlefield likely meant never getting up, and in that spirit, Shuaijiao's curriculum focuses on throwing in several ways. It is a standing grappling style, meaning that although there are hip throws, leg sweeps and hand techniques, like many other arts, there is no ground grappling. Shuaijiao's goal is to finish in a dominant standing position.

Tale Re-Told: an immersive story-theater experience (for grown-ups)

Tale Re-Told is an immersive, two-act story-theater experience for grown-ups that transforms a single traditional tale into a space for collective reimagining. In Act I, storyteller Carolina Quiroga guides audience volunteers through a faithful performance of a folktale using narration, puppets, and playful direction. After a short break, the audience joins in a creative brainstorm-rethinking characters, outcomes, and meanings. Then, in Act II, the story is retold, but reshaped through improvisation, fragmentation, and shared imagination. This is a space where stories evolve-and everyone has a hand in the telling. THE MOUNTAIN GOATS Jenny from Thebes began its life as many albums by the Mountain Goats do, with John Darnielle playing the piano until a lyric emerged. That lyric, “Jenny was a warrior / Jenny was a thief / Jenny hit the corner clinic begging for relief,” became “Jenny III,” a song which laid down a challenge he’d never taken up before: writing a sequel to one of his most beloved albums. The Mountain Goats’ catalog is thick with recurring characters—Jenny, who originally appears in the All Hail West Texas track bearing her name, as well as in “Straight Six” from Jam Eater Blues and Transcendental Youth side two jam “Night Light,” is one of these, someone who enters a song unexpectedly, pricking up the ears of fans who are keen on continuing the various narrative threads running through the Mountain Goats’ discography before vanishing into the mist. In these songs, Jenny is largely defined by her absence, and she is given that definition by other characters. She is running from something. These features are beguiling, both to the characters who’ve told her story so far and to the listener. They invite certain questions: Who is Jenny, really? What is she running from? Well, she’s a warrior and a thief, and, this being an album by the Mountain Goats, it’s a safe bet whatever she’s fleeing is something bad. Something catastrophically bad. Jenny from Thebes is the story of Jenny, her southwestern ranch style house, the people for whom that house is a place of safety, and the west Texas town that is uncomfortable with its existence. It is a story about the individual and society, about safety and shelter and those who choose to provide care when nobody else will. This is what a follow-up to All Hail West Texas entails. But if you think about the Mountain Goats as they were in 2001, when Darnielle wrote and recorded that album on his own, mostly into his Panasonic RX-FT500 boombox, and how they are now as the recording and touring outfit of Darnielle, Peter Hughes, Matt Douglas, and Jon Wurster, you may find yourself asking how. That occurred to Darnielle, too. Lifted by Matt Douglas’ horn and string arrangements, the dreamy guitar of Bully leader (and Bleed Out producer) Alicia Bognanno, and backing vocals from Kathy Valentine of The Go-Go’s (“Only One Way,” “Same as Cash,” “Going to Dallas”) and Matt Nathanson (“Fresh Tattoo”), Jenny from Thebes is a widescreen musical in scope, a melodrama of richly detailed characters and sweeping emotions. The west Texas the Mountain Goats conjure for Jenny is huge and already crumbling to the ground when we meet her in lead single “Clean Slate,” where a new arrival to the safehouse finds it nearly full, his host beyond exhaustion. Her burdens are heavy, and the measures they cause her to take have consequences that scale well beyond anything she could have anticipated when she decided to open her home to others. Such gestures are noble and doomed.

Atheist chat - every Sunday 10-noon

We hope you will come chat with us this coming Sunday morning or some time soon. We also have Wednesday evening meetings at Boodas Brewing in Hendersonville once a month. Also on Wednesday evenings we have a Book Club that meets every two weeks at Standard Pizza on Biltmore. There are no dues. Sign up in Meetup to receive emailed notices about our activities. Our url there is https://tinyurl.com/3dc5sxyx Our newly-formed group has 51 members already. Average meetings have 10-15 pople attending. The conversations have been excellent. We chat about atheism and religion, but also about other things that are not related to religion etc at all. In this "community" are people who don't believe in religion. Some of us wonder if "the universe" or something energy-related effect our lives. Others feel maybe in 100 years science will be able to explain time-without-beginning and other mysteries. Until further notice our Sunday morning get togethers will be 10AM - noon at the cafe at Earth Fare. The address is 66 Westgate Pkwy, Asheville. It is a large and very good "health supermarket". You'll find the Westgate shopping center right off Patton, after crossing the bridge on 240 West. Earth Fare is at the far end of the parking lot, past the Country Inn and Suites and a CVS, UPS store and more. There is plenty of free parking. We will be there starting at 10AM and will plan to stay until noon to meet any late arrivals. They have a very nice cafe that you'll find off to the left after entering the store. The grocery area also has some good deals - see https://www.earthfare.com/#about We’ll have a sign so you can see what table(s) we are using. (Bring your kids if you like but we won't have any activites prepared for them.) Note: Because we hope each member will feel it's THEIR group, suggestions and input are welcome. Let's start with your input about these things... Is 10AM Sunday a good time for you? What other days / times might be better? Do you have other coffee houses or breakfast places to suggest? Might you be interested in joining our trivia contest group? It's another fun way to hang out with like-minded people (other Atheists). Is there some other kind of get together you'd like to organize? It could be one-time or recurring. Some possibilities - movie club, bowling...who knows? Perhaps an online Zoom chat? Peter and Ally

Love Bubble

September 21, 2025

Love Bubble

“Love Bubble” is the name of the freshest harmony-driven trio in WNC. They thrive on covering and writing songs that harken to the bubble gum sounds of the 1960’s and 70’s. Their playlist is full of kitschy, catchy pop songs that put everyone in a fun loving, care free and spirited mood Hank Bones, who is affectionately referred to as “the man of 1000 songs”, is also a master on guitar, arranging and songwriting. His voice will melt all your cares away and make you wish you could sing just like him! His comedic skills get mixed reviews. The brilliant and scintillating vocal stylings of world renowned, Star Search finalist and sought after session’s singer, Paula Hanke, also plays flute with delicious panache, banjolele when she remembers to bring it to the gig and a tipple that’s hung and strung like a ukulele; she’ll explain when you get there. Rounding out this throuple, is the legendary and acclaimed band leader and the one we call Peggy ‘Chaunteuse’ Ratusz who also plays a bit of harmonica, a lot of tambourine and is known for playing the best kazoo solos this side of Swannanoa!

Adult Coloring with Cats

Feeling a little stressed out? Doom and gloom getting you down? There are many scientific studies that support the understanding that petting cats and coloring relieves stress and anxiety. So why not do both? Release your inner child by coloring with us in the cat lounge. Take 50 minutes for yourself and cuddle with the panthers, meet other cat-lovers, and color a beautiful picture of a cat from our adult coloring books! Coloring books and markers (and of course, cats) are provided for this relaxation session. And once everyone is done with their picture, you can choose to take it home or hang it on the altar in the shop for Bastet! Tickets are $15 per person and admission goes directly to the care of our resident panthers. Children ages 12 and up are able to attend but it is meant to be calm and relaxing for all attendees so please keep that in mind. (We love kids but sometimes our stressors are our kids and we need time to ourselves!)

Ying Yang Qigong

September 22, 2025

Ying Yang Qigong

What is Qigong? Qigong, pronounced “chi gong,” was developed in China thousands of years ago as part of traditional Chinese medicine. It involves using exercises to optimize energy within the body, mind, and spirit, with the goal of improving and maintaining health and well-being. Qigong has both psychological and physical components and involves the regulation of the mind, breath, and body’s movement and posture. In most forms of qigong: Breath is slow, long, and deep. Breath patterns may switch from abdominal breathing to breathing combined with speech sounds. Movements are typically gentle and smooth, aimed for relaxation. Mind regulation includes focusing one’s attention and visualization. Dynamic (active) qigong techniques primarily focus on body movements, especially movements of the whole body or arms and legs. Meditative (passive) qigong techniques can be practiced in any posture that can be maintained over time and involve breath and mind exercises, with almost no body movement. How is Qigong different from Tai Chi? Tai Chi originated as an ancient martial art, but over the years it has become more focused on health promotion and rehabilitation. When tai chi is performed for health, it is considered a form of qigong and involves integrated physical postures, focused attention, and controlled breathing. Tai chi is one of the hundreds of forms of qigong exercises that was developed in China. Other forms of qigong include Baduanjin, Liuzijue, Hu Yue Xian, Yijin Jing, and medical qigong. What are the benefits of Qigong? Qigong opens the flow of energy in meridians used in acupuncture and Chinese medicine. It enhances our ability to feel the Life Force underlying the physical world and to deepen our communication with it. Physically, slow gentle qigong movements warm tendons, ligaments, and muscles; tonify vital organs and connective tissue; and promote circulation of body fluids (blood, synovial, lymph). Thousands of studies have shown qigong effective in helping to heal life challenges ranging from high blood pressure and chronic illness to emotional frustration, mental stress, and spiritual crisis.

Tai Chi For Beginners Yang 10 & 24

What is Yang Style Tai Chi? This is the Tai Chi that most people envision when they think of Tai Chi. Slow, gentle movements that promote good health. Tai Chi originated in Chen Village in the mid 1600s as a martial arts style off limits to outsiders. Yang Luchan was the first outsider to learn in the early 1800s. He became very proficient in Tai Chi and was given permission to teach it freely to others provided that he removed the fighting aspects from it. Yang Luchan recognized the great health benefits that come from a regular Tai Chi practice and created his own style named Yang Style Tai Chi. His long form, the Yang 108 form, consists of 108 movements and is based off of the Chen Laojia Yilu form. Yang style Tai Chi is appropriate for people of all ages to study. In recent years there have been many studies on the health benefits from a regular Tai Chi practice. Many of the results from these studies can be found in the National Library of Medicine. Some of the results include releif from stress, anxiety, and depression. Increased recovery time from stroke, heart attack, and long covid. It also has been shown to alleviate symptoms from age related illnesses such as Parkensin’s, Dementia, and Osteoporosis.

Save UNCA Woods Benefit Show

ALL AGES IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO ATTEND THIS EVENT, YOU CAN ALSO DONATE BY CLICKING HERE UNC Asheville's 45-acre urban forest has been a cherished community resource and wildlife habitat for decades. It's now under threat of development despite its status as one of the last remaining urban forests in Asheville. This show is a benefit for Friends of the Woods, a group of concerned citizens, students, UNCA faculty, neighbors, and more who have the support of the Five Points Neighborhood Association and other local organizations committed to the preservation of this precious urban forest. Given the time-sensitive nature and Friends of the Woods being an entirely volunteer-run effort, we are fundraising for a campaign to seek transparency and accountability, and to positively influence the university's use of the forest. The money raised will be used to further the campaign's efforts. Examples include retaining legal counsel, purchasing signs to increase public awareness, organizing events, paying hosting and domain fees for the website, and preparing for future costs of partners (vendors, contractors, etc.) supporting this campaign. Because this is a volunteer effort, none of the members of the Friends of the Woods group will be paid from any funds collected. If any money is left after all is said and done, we will donate it to a local land conservancy. For more information, please visit www.saveuncawoods.org LEAH SONG PROJECT (featuring members or Rising Appalachia) Born into a musical family from Georgia, Leah Song is a storyteller, song-catcher, musician, poet, and community builder known primarily for her role as frontwoman of Rising Appalachia, alongside her sister Chloe. As a soloist, she incorporates sultry vocals, storytelling, folklore, ballads and boleros into her laid-back troubadour performances. Her music is based in the traditions of Southern soul, the diasporic music of the Celtic Isles and her deep studies of traditional folk music from across the Americas. WILD ROOTS Wild Roots is an independent, women-led band based in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. Headed by Julia Houghton and Olivia Moore, the group released their debut album, Wild Roots Rising, in 2021 and have since continued to tour, playing stages and festivals across the country. Olivia and Julia have co-created music for nearly a decade and collaborate in many areas of life; in addition to being soul sisters, the two share a deep passion for sustainable living and environmental justice. While Wild Roots' music celebrates the joy of friendship and community, it also seeks to hold those in power accountable and question the status quo. Julia and Olivia harness their political passions to shed light on issues of social injustice and the degradation of the natural world.
