Upper Whitewater Falls
At 411 feet, Upper Whitewater Falls in North Carolina is the tallest waterfall east of the Rockies, with the combined falls dropping 811 feet. A paved quarter-mile walkway from the parking lot leads to an accessible overlook, offering a stunning view of the falls. For a closer experience, a lower overlook is accessible via 154 wooden steps. Beyond the overlooks, a half-mile spur trail descends 600 feet to the Whitewater River and the Foothills Trail, providing additional scenic views. The area is rich in biodiversity, with opportunities to spot wildflowers, salamanders, and various ferns. Please remain on designated trails for safety, as the terrain can be hazardous. Upper Whitewater Falls is located approximately 60 miles from Asheville in the Nantahala National Forest. The site operates year-round from dawn until dusk, with a parking fee of $3 per vehicle.
